After over a year of planning, we’ve finally been able to bring the first class of co.space students together! This past weekend we filled a motorhome full of the entire class of students, drove 3 hours to a retreat home north of Pittsburgh, and spent the weekend together brainstorming what the next year might look like. As one of the co-founders, it was an amazing experience getting to sit down around the first dinning room table and share a meal together – I can only imagine what next Fall will be like getting to do that each and every night.
Over the course of the weekend, we facilitated a lot of workshops to imagine what the home will look like. We have lots of butcher paper that we are slowly going through to document all of the ideas and suggestions. Additionally, this weekend was a time to get to know one another and begin setting some objectives for what we personally each want to get out of this experience. Each of us wrote two letters to ourselves, the first focused on the future we hope for, and the second on the future we fear. We sealed the envelopes and will re-read them once everyone graduates from Penn State and moves on from the home.
At the end of the retreat, we went around and gave each resident a rock with the word ‘Hope’ engraved on it. This is a sign of what we anticipate the co.space reminding the world of – that there are incredibly driven and passionate young people in the world who care about the impact they have. Despite the negative news and list of global problems we hear about every day, there is also a hopeful message beginning to emerge, and the co.space is a place where that hope gets to live 24/7. It’s an exciting time for us at co.space and we’re looking forward to see what comes next!
